Weck is undoubtedly a key player in the world of food preservation products. This German company, founded at the beginning of the 20th century, is renowned for the quality and durability of its glass jars. The German company is also enjoying growing success, particularly because it develops jars whose vintage design is very appealing! Weck jars can be found in many modern kitchens, where they are used both for preserving and for decoratively storing spices and cereals. If these containers are particularly popular, it is also because of their versatility: the German brand offers a very wide choice of volumes and formats, adapted to the needs of professionals and individuals alike.
CONSERVOR invites you to discover a wide selection of Weck jars: for vacuum preservation or for storing dry foodstuffs, adopt glass containers that are as stylish as they are functional!
A look back at the history of Weck jars
Food preservation has always been an essential need for humans: storing foodstuffs made it possible to avoid shortages, particularly during periods of poor harvests. For centuries, salting or sugar preservation were common practice to ensure a stock of food.
It was in the 17th century that the very first sterilization process emerged in Germany: experiments conducted on vacuum and atmospheric pressure, little by little, contributed to the development of a new sterilization process. Of course, several discoveries and studies had to intersect to bring to life the sterilization process of Verrerie Weck as we know it today.
It is precisely to the chemist Rudolf Rempel that we owe the success of Weck jars. Rudolf began his research using jars with a polished rim, to which he added a rubber ring and a tin lid. The scientist then plunged these jars into boiling water, holding the container with a weight. A few months later, he realized that the milk preserved in it had retained all its freshness. A patent was then filed: the history of Verrerie Weck began!
What are the advantages of Weck jars?
Although the German brand has certainly had to adapt to many economic and political contexts, the company has always managed to bounce back and make itself known. Even today, Weck continues to appeal to individuals and businesses looking for reliable, yet aesthetic, preservation solutions. We appreciate the durability of Weck jars, their ease of use, and their design which allows them to be displayed in the kitchen or even used as a serving dish.
At a time when many households are moving towards a more eco-responsible lifestyle, Weck jars are also an ideal alternative for limiting the consumption of single-use plastics. Thanks to this type of jar, you can indeed opt for dry bulk foods, but you can also take the time to prepare your own preserves. Once washed, the jar is infinitely reusable. Only the complementary elements (seals and lids in particular) will need to be replaced. Also note that Weck jars are guaranteed BPA-free, lead-free, phthalate-free, and PVC-free; they contain no substances harmful to health.
Glass containers have the advantage of being very versatile: they can hold marinades as well as vegetables, prepared dishes, jams, or even cereals or spices, for example.
Weck jars can also be put in the dishwasher and used in the oven (traditional or microwave). They are therefore containers that can be used to reheat small dishes carefully prepared in advance! Thanks to their vintage and elegant design, the glass jars are often used by restaurateurs as serving dishes: for example, they can be used to present verrines and desserts.
Weck Jar Usage Guide
If you want to make preserves, follow the sterilization process specific to Weck jars. If the jar has already been used, simply clean it with soapy water: an initial empty sterilization is not necessary.
- Fill your jar with your preparation.
- Turn the lid over so that the strawberry emblem appears inside. Push the rubber ring onto the edge of the lid.
- Place the clamps on the recessed part of the lid and push the tab until it clicks into a protruding position on the jar.
If you use a sterilizer, make sure to immerse the jars three-quarters of their height. Once the jar has cooled, be sure to remove the clamps. When the jar is tightly closed and the tab points downwards, sterilization is complete and your preparation is safe.
When using Weck jars, it is important to avoid thermal shocks. Thus, be careful not to put your preparations directly from the fridge to the oven. The temperature difference must not exceed 50 degrees, otherwise the glass risks breaking.
